PPC Data Very Interesting- Don't Settle for the Top 5

Author: Phil | Filed under: Searcn Engine Ranking

I stumbled across an interesting chart this evening. Apparently this PPC chart has been around for a while, but this is the first time I have seen it:

PPC % of clicks based upon position

Needless to say this information has been discussed before in many SEO (search engine optimization) circles before, yet I have not seen it so clearly displayed before. The data represented in this image comes from a Cornell University study on web surfers click behavior on search engine results within Google.

Amazing to most is that position number one gets 4 times (4X) as many clicks as position number 2. Amazing huh? 4 times as many clicks, imagine what this would mean to your business? A profitable business could suddenly become a whirl wind of profits and complete market domination.

I have had discussions with many current clients and potential clients about their current rankings and whether they should press up on their top 5 keywords (which may be somewhere in the top 10), or spend their time going after long tail keywords which are less competitive and far easier to rank.

Assuming the keyword has a good conversion rate, I think this data clearly supports the efforts to attain number one ranking for your top keywords. SEO (search engine optimization) is tricky: if you’re reading this and your site is currently ranked number 4 (and you’re happy) —guess what, you’re leaving 15 times as many clicks for that keyword on the table! 15 times, not easy to comprehend. Well let’s say you get 100 clicks a day for your top keyword. That would mean going from number 4 to number 1would take you from 100 clicks a day to 1500 clicks a day! Whoosh!

Needless to say, fire up your search engine marketing budget, as I am quite sure that increasing your traffic by 15 times will certainly rapidly pay for your SEO professional.
